Pierre Bourdieu’s theories and forms of praxis play an essential role in cultural studies discourses and in socio-political debates. In this context the radicalness of his political engagement and his self-reflection are especially significant. New perspectives and questions arise from a previously little known facet of Bourdieu’s work: the photographs he took in the 1950s and 1960s in colonial Algeria of ethnographic objects and arrangements and scenes of streets and everyday life.
The articles in this issue of transversal deal with the uses of this extensive photographic picture archive, and with the problematic issues of photography as a method in between scientific objectification, political engagement, and the politics of pictures of colonial violence. Issues of debate are questions of praxis theory, of a conflictual simultaneity of the colonial self and the colonized other, and of an intersectional approach to the importance of Bourdieu in Postcolonial Studies.
